Introduction =============== This is DisplayLink Mac OS X Software v2.4. This release delivers the following improvements * Support for multiple DisplayLink screens on OS X 10.9 and later * Stability improvements for OS X 10.9 and later * Bug fixes and compatibility improvements for all products This version does not support OS X version 10.7.x and earlier. See section E for details. A full list of known issues can be found in the "Known Issues" section below. More information on how to use this software can be found in the Mac OS X User Guide found on the DisplayLink website (http://www.displaylink.com/mac) A1. Important notes about DL5xxx, DL-3x00 and DL-41xx Firmware ============================================================== This software release contains an embedded firmware image. DL-5xxx, DL-3xxx and DL-41xx devices will be automatically upgraded with this firmware upon connection if required. The upgrade is silent, therefore screens connected to DL-5xxx, DL-3xxx or DL-41xx devices may require a few seconds to appear for the first time. B. Contents =========== A. Introduction A1. Bugs fixed in this release ============================= Issues fixed since version 2.3 ------------------------------ Workarounds for some long standing issues on OS X 10.9 and later: - Display arrangement is not kept when using 2 or more DisplayLink displays. (16112) - Sometimes rotating one DisplayLink monitor rotates a different display. (16139) - Connecting one DisplayLink screen together with other virtual displays will result in corruption on the DisplayLink screen. - The following Window Server crashes may be resolved on some systems: - On the Retina Macbook Pro, changes to the desktop layout that include changes to the built-in monitor can log the user out. This is caused by Apple's Window Server crashing. (16207) - The Window Server crashes logging out the user during some full screen transitions, for example Show Desktop. (17240) - Low performance with more than one DisplayLink screen - With more than one DisplayLink screen connected some applications can show severe flickering on DisplayLink screens. Examples of applications that show this issue are Safari, QuickTime and the App store. (16107, 15777, 15764) Screen frozen when changing the system clock to an earlier time. (19317) Endless stream of WindowServer "disabling OpenGL" log messages in Console. (17310) Occasional high CPU usage. (18539) Incorrect resolutions selected after replugging a display to a DisplayLink device. (18111) Black DisplayLink screens when resuming from sleep. (18590) 4K resolutions not available on some monitors when rotated. (18142) No picture after USB re-plug of a hub connecting multiple USB display adapters. (19231) Screen corruption in some multiple DisplayLink screen configurations when using 4K resolutions in mirror. (18554) DisplayLink screens may not be removed from the system after USB disconnection. (18095) D. Supported Operating Systems ============================== The DisplayLink software can be installed on any Intel-based desktop or laptop Apple Mac computer running client versions of OS X Yosemite 10.10.3, OS X Mavericks 10.9.5, OS X Mountain Lion 10.8.5. At the time of writing these were the latest available versions of Mac OS X tested against: later OS versions might show compatibility issues. OS X versions earlier than 10.8.5 are not supported. Earlier versions of the DisplayLink software can be used: - Version 2.2 is the last version to support Mac OS Lion 10.7.x. and Mac OS X Snow Leopard 10.6.x. - Version 1.7.x is the last version to support Mac OS X Leopard 10.5.x and Mac OS X Tiger 10.4.x. Visit http://www.displaylink.com/mac to download older drivers versions. E. Supported Mac platforms ========================== This software supports all Intel-based Macs compatible with OS X version 10.8.5 and later. ***It does not support Power-PC based Macs.*** F. Language support =================== The DisplayLink software installer is only available in English. G. Supported Hardware ===================== Device families supported: - DL-5xxx - DL-41xx - DL-3xxx - DL-1x5 - DL-1x0 Kensington sd400v Office Dock with auto install is not supported. H. Limitations ============== Graphics limitations -------------------- Mirror mode not kept after reboot/replug on OS X 10.8.5 and later. (16473) Clamshell mode (built-in screen off while the lid is closed) requires a monitor to be connected to the Mac's built-in video output even if other DisplayLink screens are available. No 3D (OpenGL) acceleration - some features of Mac OS X applications that require hardware OpenGL acceleration, such as Keynote presentations, will have limited functionality. The internal screen is kept active while in clamshell mode on OSX systems with a single HD3000 graphics card. Colour calibration does not work with DisplayLink enabled displays. iTunes protected content is not visible on built-in graphics when DisplayLink screens are connected. (17087) Note: Applications that require Quartz\OpenGL\hardware acceleration support will likely exhibit problems. Some problems can be avoided by making sure the DisplayLink display is not set to be the main display (the display with the menu bar). If an application refuses to launch when a DisplayLink display is present, try to disconnect all the DisplayLink displays, then launch it and then reconnect the displays. OS X 10.9 Mavericks and 10.10 Yosemite limitations -------------------------------------------------- Since Mavericks 10.9 and up to the latest 10.10 release tested, OS X does not correctly support virtual framebuffers. This includes third party USB and wireless displays. This version of the DisplayLink driver works around some issues but other issues are still visible: Logout caused by the Window Server crashing while changing monitor settings. (18862) All screens black and unusable after unplugging a DisplayLink screen. This is caused by Apple's Window server crashing. This can be recovered by replugging the DisplayLink device. (16155) In Yosemite some application windows can show corruption around the edges. (18064) Some applications can show corruption and/or missing contents while updating windows contents. Examples are Maps, iBooks, FaceTime, the Dock and the menu bar. (16365, 15855, 15778, 17092, 19068) The Dock issue has been resolved in Yosemite 10.10 (15778). Misplaced or missing menu items on the DisplayLink screen. Changing the resolution of the external screen can sometimes resolve the issue. (16480, 16744) On some systems fast user switching fails when DisplayLink screens are connected. (16153) Sometimes when DisplayLink monitor is set as primary after waking up from sleep it is disconnected and there is no login screen visible. (16149) Corruption on the screen may be visible while rotating DisplayLink displays (16151) Since OS X 10.9.3, the desktop contextual menu is sometimes not available on DisplayLink screens. (17086) To avoid this issue: - Disable "Display have different spaces" option - In case "Display have different spaces" is active, temporarily move the dock to the extended screen at least once after connecting the DisplayLink screens DL-41xx limitations ------------------- Some advanced DL-41xx features are not supported on the OS X platform: On Screen Display, splash screen and connection status feedback. I. Common recovery steps ======================== Most of the issues can be resolved by replugging the DisplayLink device which exhibits the problem. In very rare cases, the recovery requires rebooting. J. Known Issues =============== Not all display modes are available for rotated DisplayLink screens. (13464) On MacBooks with Retina display internal screens may get corrupted if screens are in mirroring mode. A workaround is to switch to extend. (15168) Changing the monitor connected to a DL-1x0/DL-1x5 DisplayLink device may require the device to be unplugged and replugged for the new monitor to be correctly recognised. Two DisplayLink monitors mirroring each other may sometimes cause corruption on main Mac's screen. (15633) Screen corruption while mirroring multiple DisplayLink screens. (16121, 17077) Desktop & Screensaver window is sometimes crashing when DisplayLink monitor is set as a primary display. (16122) On some systems, unable to login after restarting while in mirror mode. (17095)
